National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an international organization founded in 1921 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) to recognize and promote holistic excellence among students at various educational levels. Since its inception, the NHS has guided its local chapters with four fundamental purposes:

  1. Fostering enthusiasm for academic achievement.
  2. Encouraging a desire to serve the community.
  3. Developing leadership skills.
  4. Promoting character and personal integrity.

These purposes serve as the selection criteria for recognizing the most outstanding students in each school community.

The NHS operates across three levels, aligned with students’ grade levels:

  • National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS): For students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
  • National Junior Honor Society (NJHS): For students in 8th and 9th grades.
  • National Honor Society (NHS): For students in 11th and 12th grades.

Being part of these societies is not only an honor but also a personal and academic commitment. This commitment has cemented the reputation of excellence for these organizations both within schools and in the broader community.

The NEHS, NJHS, and NHS are founded on five core pillars that reflect the comprehensive profile of their members:

  • Leadership: The ability to inspire and guide others.
  • Character: Acting with integrity, responsibility, and respect.
  • Citizenship: Making positive contributions to society.
  • Academic Excellence: Maintaining high academic standards.
  • Service: A genuine commitment to the welfare of the community.

At Colegio Granadino, the dispositions for learning also play a crucial role in students’ development, including respect, responsibility, effective time management, effort, organization, collaboration, bilingualism, and teamwork.

Selection Criteria for the National Honor Society (NHS)

To be admitted to the NHS, students must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Academic Performance:
    • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.2 for NEHS and 3.6 for NJHS-NHS (advanced level) in the final grade report from the previous school year.
    • Note: If a significant number of students meet this criterion, the minimum GPA may be raised.
  2. Learning Dispositions:
    • Achieve excellent ratings in the majority of learning dispositions in both the final report of the previous school year and the first term of the current year.
  3. Exemplary Behavior:
    • Have no repeated disciplinary issues or behavior reports.
  4. Faculty Council Approval:
    • The council evaluates the criteria above and, if the number of eligible students exceeds available spots, selects candidates with the highest overall performance across all areas.

Important Considerations

  • Final approval for NHS membership is determined by the Faculty Council.
  • The maximum number of NEHS members per grade is limited. If the number of candidates exceeds 22 students in grades 4 through 6, those with the highest academic and personal achievements will be selected.

Membership Responsibilities

Being part of the National Honor Society provides students with an invaluable opportunity to develop their talents, reinforce their values, and contribute positively to the Granadino community. It is a path of excellence, leadership, and commitment, preparing them to successfully face future challenges.

NHS students must complete 20 hours of individual community service and participate in group initiatives to raise funds for activities that benefit the Society. Projects carried out during the school year include:

  • Collecting and donating supplies for underprivileged schools.
  • Volunteering at elderly care centers.
  • Supporting mental health programs at the school.
  • Tutoring peers.
  • Assisting the Entrepreneurship Club.
  • Managing logistics for the “I Run For You” charity race, a community event raising funds for the Social Service Program.
  • Organizing Valentine’s Day activities.
  • Participating in monthly leadership and teamwork training sessions.
  • Supporting foundations.
  • Contributing to various school activities financially.
  • Engaging in Christmas events.
  • Running primary school programs like Reading Buddies and Learning Support.
  • Collaborating with Granadino Solidario programs and initiatives.

By embracing these opportunities, students not only enhance their academic and personal growth but also strengthen their ability to lead, serve, and inspire others.
